Maternity Pillow Tutorial AKA "the Cushy Cuddler"

The belly.........is g  r  O   W   I    N    G!!

In light of this recent event, it has become increasingly clear that I need more support under my belly than in recent weeks.  This has been on my to do list for a couple weeks now!

I give you...my Maternity Pillow...or the Cushy Cuddler...

I haven't actually slept with this yet (tonight my friends, tonight.) but I DID lay down and try it out.  In retrospect, I might have made it wider in the middle where my belly lays, but I think it'll be fine.  My goal was a narrower pillow.  I've been sleeping with a regular size pillow under my belly in a queen size bed.  You see?  Doesn't leave a lot of extra space for the hubs or me :)

FYI: this is another great project to use an old sheet for.
I should've just said "for which to use an old sheet" but that sounds so...uppity to me.

Materials:
1 yrd 45" fabric (old sheets work great!), pins, scissors, thread, polyester fiber fill

Lay your sheet on the floor and fold over.  I free handed a C shape with a fabric marker.  Lay down on the sheet with your knees bent at a 90* angle.  Make a mark where your head is and where your knees are.  Your head should be at the top of the "C" and your knees at the bottom.

Measurement A-B is 11 3/4".
Measurement A-C is 42 1/4" long.

Pin all the way around

Sew a 3/8" seam allowance all the way around the pillow leaving a 12" hole with which to turn.

Turn right side out.

STUFF that thing!!

Pin hole closed.

Whipstitch or machine stitch the hole closed.

Because of it's flexibility, this would make a good nursing pillow as well (NOT a BOPPY pillow)  I will not be propping our baby in this pillow because it is too soft.

Now, if you ARE pregnant, or know someone who is, run along and go make them one of these great pillows.  It's very simple and took me all of 30 minutes to make: from the cutting to the stuffing.

  1. I have another use for the pillow idea, perhaps slightly adjusted measurement (no conceptual sense in my head--gotta see it) and definitely different stuffing. Hubs and daughter have neck and shoulder muscle spasms that not much controls, but heat helps. I'll try to let you know how it works. I know you're the one entitled to mental mush, but believe me, you're not alone!!
