VBS Week--Craft #1: Miner's Bag

Miner's Bag

My friend and I are heading up the craft department at our VBS this year (year #2) so I thought I would share the crafts that we chose to do.  Please understand first of all, that none of these are our original ideas! Our church uses a VBS curriculum from Answers in Genesis and along with the curriculum comes craft ideas.  For the most part, we liked the end ideas but did not like the product if you will.  So, while we are using the same basic ideas, we are NOT always using the same materials.  Moving on...

Our Monday craft was the Miner's Bag for collecting all of those "gold nuggets" that they'll be finding this week! Oh yeah, the theme for the week is "Rock of Ages" with gold mining as the decor, story, etc.

Moving on...

Materials: a 12"x12" piece of felt or fleece,  1 1/2' chording/lacing, scissors, pony beads, treasure

My circle was already cut out, but fold your square in half.

Fold the square in half again.

Beginning at one corner where it's folded, cut an arc from corner to corner.  Make sure you're cutting from fold to fold.  You want to cut off the open parts of the square, not the folded parts.  Make sense???

Unfold it and you should have a circle.

Take your scissors and cut a tiny slit around the perimeter of the circle about an inch from the edge, and each slit will be about an inch apart.  You'll end up having about 26 slits all the way around the circle.

See the slit???

Using your chording, lace all the way around the circle, weaving it in and out until you come back around to the beginning.

Measure up about 2 1/2" from the bottom of one end of the lacing and tie a double knot.

String 5 or 6 beads (or 30 if it floats ur boat) onto the string then tie another double knot at the bottom of the beads.  Repeat with other end of the string.  Should look something like this.

Fill with treasure!!  We used plastic gold coins, and candy (don't all kids think that treasure is ACTUALLY candy??)  Cinch up the laces and go find some gold nuggets!!

For the older kids, they can do the whole craft on their own.  For the younger children, we had the circles and holes cut out ahead of time.  The children laced the strings and beads, and filled their bags.

AND

All three of the bags my children made.

Stay tuned tomorrow for Craft #2!!!

Oh...did I mention I'm wearing a costume each night??

  1. Wow! What a simple craft. That would be a great craft for a pirate party!
