Duo Pocket Changing Pad Clutch TUTORIAL

I have a baby shower to attend tomorrow and I love coming up different idea for handmade gifts.  I've already been "hired" to make a diaper bag, so I thought I'd put together a couple accessories and purchase the "equipment" that needed to go with it.  Here is my Duo Pocket Changing Pad!  And uhemm, I stayed extra late to put together a tutorial for you as well.  The photo to the left is full with 4 diapers and a pack of wipes.  I considered adding a narrow/long slide pocket as well for a tube of cream.  Still contemplating that one.  Maybe another time.  The difference between mine and the next guys is the two pocket thing.  I found a business called Wipesout on etsy who makes these with a side entrance for the wipes.  She makes them accesible from either end of the folded up changing pad for easy access when needing to clean messy hands and faces.  I thought that was a great idea but I didn't like it being open on both ends.  So, I came up with a slightly different design.  On this version, the wipes are accessible from one end and you don't have to unfold the whole clutch just to get to the wipes.  So...what do you think?

Materials

½ yd outside fabric (100% cotton)

½ yd inside fabric (flannel, terry cloth, thin fleece)

1/2 yd fusible fleece/thermolam (Thanks to a reader for catching my mistake here!)

2” Velcro

Thread

Note: 1/2" seam allowance unless otherwise noted.
1. Cut outside and inside fabric to 13”x33”. Cut fusible fleece to match the outside fabric. Adhere fusible fleece to back side of the outside (or printed) fabric.

 2. Pin these two pieces of fabric right sides together and sew all the way around leaving a 5” hole for turning.
Clip all four corners making sure not to cut into your stitches.

3. Turn right side out. Press. Pin all the way around the rectangle. I do this to get the cleanest topstitching I can

4. Topstitch using a ¼-1/8” seam allowance. While topstitching, you should catch the hole that was used for turning the piece right side out.

5.  Use a wipes case for measuring how much to fold up.  You want this pocket to be rather snug so the wipes don't fall out.  Lay the rectangle with the pattern fabric down.  Place the wipes container on one side of the rectangle and fold the fabric over it.  Make sure it fits snuggly and then pin in place.  This is your first pocket.

6.  Choose the side that will be the bottom of the pocket.  Sew down the bottom of the pocket and then continue sewing down the side of the pocket, ending at the opening.  Be sure to backstitch a number of time for strength
7. Fold the clutch all the way up and mark where you want your velcro to be. Attach your velcro at this point.

8. Fold the pocket side up once more. Sew down the side of the pocket that is closed, catching all three layers. This is very thick so go slowly.

9. On the opposite side, where you have the open side of the pocket you'll sew through two layers. Place a pin where you'll start sewing. Sew this side of the pocket in place making sure to backstitch at both ends.

10. Toss in some wipes, diapers and desitin and head out to the baby shower that you just made this gift for!

  10. So the top part of this, where the velcro is on the opposite side of the pouches is the "changing diaper pad" part of it??

    1. When I use it, I lay baby's head on the pockets for some cushion and their body is on the pad portion. The pad is long enough for an newborn to lay on it completely and not have their head on the pocket portion as well.

  12. Is the fleece measured right? I had it cut to 1/3 of a yard and it's not wide enough now. It's short an inch which would work if I don't sew it into the initial stitching, but it doesn't look like that's what you did in the pictures. Thanks.

    1. HI-I am assuming you are talking about the fusible fleece? The fleece (inside fabric) that I used calls for 1/2yd.

      However,

Looks like you caught my mistake! thankfully, it should still work just fine because it's only the difference of one inch. 1/3 of a yard is 12". Your chosen fabrics should each be cut to 13" wide by 33". So, go ahead and fuse the fusible fleece leaving 1/2" on either side. This will simply reduce the bulk in your seems and make it easier to sew. If you have more than 1/2" inch left on either side, then you might have cut wrong. Hope this helps!
