Crafting for Christmas...shhhh!

So, I completed a Christmas gift last night!  Woot! Woot!  Have any of you ever heard of Kitty Cats and Airplanes?  Well, recently she did a series on jewelry making which has always intrigued me.  So when I found this great button bracelet tutorial I knew I had to try it.  Not to mention, there are a few women in my life who love them some jewelry!  So, this is my first try at using chain, jump rings, and clasps!  GASP!  I know.

I'm really happy with the way it turned out.  I can't wait to give it to it's recipient!

No one ever said I should be a hand model! Ha!  I even have a scar on my wrist just below the bracelet.  I'm right handed though so I had to photograph my left hand.

In other news, thanks to those of you who have volunteered to do some test runs on my new patterns!  I'll email you when they're ready with a link to the pdf file.  If anyone else is interested in doing pattern testing, please contact me.  I'd like to get these tried out on 10 different people.  I haven't reached that number yet.

Have you been over to Craftiness is not Optional lately?  You should!  I'm giving away another great bag over there...and the last giveaway I did on another blog...well, one of MY readers won it!  So, it pays to enter :)  Hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving!  I am officially in crazy mode, trying to craft a bunch of different gifts.  But it is what I enjoy so bring it!

I can't help myself!

First off, I have 2 patterns and 1 tutorial in the works.  I'm thinking it would be a good idea to have some other people review these patterns for me before I make them public.  So, if you are interested in trying out one of my patterns, please contact me!  They won't be ready until after the holidays so it's nothing you need to worry about right now.  I'd like to put my feelers out right now and already have a nice group of people in place who have tried out these patterns.

Anybody know what this is?  It's my next couple of projects :) I found this XXL men's black suede shirt at Goodwill!  I've been wanting to try leather but it can be hard to find affordable leather to ruin! :) One of the items I'd like to try with this is a leather cuff watch.  Has anyone seen any tutorials on this?  And of course, I have to try making a bag with this!  Who doesn't love leather?

Oh yeah, did I mention I found another piece?  This is a ladies XL skirt in brown suede.  I'm probably going to mix the two leathers for the cuff watches.  I'll be sure and post what happens with that!

In other news...what I meant by "I can't help myself,"...I'm part of another giveaway this week.  You will find this bag over at Craftiness Is Not Optional!  Jessica is hosting a giveaway for her readers, which translates into MY readers as well!  So, if you didn't get last week's Easy Hobo, head on over and enter to win this little beauty! :)
So, if you're interested in reviewing one of my in the works patterns, please contact me and let me know!  Want to try to win another Vibrant Designs bag?  Check out Craftiness is not Optional.

Boys Leapster Bag

A great idea for Christmas for a little boy...who's 5 year old has a leapster game system?  Me! Mine does!  Last year he was dying for me to "make" him something.  So, the leapster bag was born.  This one is actually for sale in my etsy shop.

Some specs...

I begin with a simple piece of paper for the pattern (copy paper).  So, 8 1/2"x 11" is the size you begin with.  Each of the four pieces, outside and lining pieces are interfaced with fusible fleece.  I do this for extra cushion to help with keeping the system safe and secure.  I add a zipper pocket to the side of the bag that will be underneath the flap.  This is where you house the games.  The strap is long: long enough to be a crossbody style bag.  It can also be made adjustable if that's the desire.

I use velcro to close this bag.  It is easier for little hands to maneuver.  My son loves his and uses it on a daily basis.  Got questions?  Email me!  If you would like to put together a bag similar to this, you can put together these two different tutorials.

Jordy Bag Tutorial

Adjustable Strap Tutorial

The flap pieces are measured at 9"x14".  You will end up cutting off a piece of this but I like to cut it long just to make sure I have enough length.  When you put the jordy bag together, the flap gets sandwhiched between the lining and outer fabrics, with right sides of the flap pinned to the right sides of the outer fabric.

Hmm, maybe I should just write a tutorial??

I'm still in shock over hitting 100 followers.  You guys are what makes blogging fun!!

Perfecting the Easy Hobo Bag

This is the most recent Easy Hobo Bag...made out of my (current) favorite fabric once again.  I'm loving the shape of this bag and think it's about ready to be put into PDF format as a pattern.  I love FREE...

BUT...
It takes an inordinant amount of time to write up tutorials/patterns.  I am debating whether I want to offer it up for free or sell them.  Either way, my tutorials and patterns are always available to make and sell them.  So, one thought was to offer it up for free for personal use and if you desire to make and sell them, to offer up the pattern with a license to sell.  Thoughts?

Hey, let's move on to the bag...

This one also has a short strap because overall I like the look of the short strap better.  However, if you like your bags to have the crossbody option, then a longer strap would be in order.  (As always, you can Custom Order a bag with whatever length strap you desire!!)

The inside of this bag has 3 slide pockets and one cell phone pocket.  There are sooo many optins with this bag though!  You can add a divider, a zipper pocket divider, a zipper pocket, adjustable strap, or even a keyfob.  I loved this bag...

And...

Sniff, Sniff...wipe a tear,

it sold at the craft fair.

What do you think?  Would you carry this style bag?  It is quickly becoming one of my favorites.  Did I mention that this months special is THIS bag??  You can Custom Order this bag this month only, for $28!!  The regular price is $35 so that's a pretty significant savings.  Just sayin'.

You wouldn't know this, but this post is my 99th post!!  Yes, I just recently reached 100 followers and my next post will be my 100th post.  So, be sure to come back on Monday to find some amazing things in celebration of...

&

100 posts!

You guys are great!

Crafting for Christmas

My first Crafting for Christmas Wednesday has arrived!  I have many gifts planned for this Christmas but I haven't been able to really get started on them until now.  Ok. I have to admit this first craft is not anyone's Christmas gift, but it is for Christmas.  I found this tutorial a few weeks back and was dying to try it out.

Here's my version...and don't tell anyone, but I forgot to bake them.  I'm a little worried...and thankful that it hangs on my front door, on the outside of the house!  Yikes.  Here you go!  My acorns are tIIIIIIIny!  I have to say that I have never seen acorns like the one is the tutorial.  They're big, and oblong, and I love how they look!  These acorns have a redish stripe on them...impossible to show in photograph, that is, at least not with my camera!  What do you think?  I'm in love!  The previous wreath was tiny yellow flowers: good for Spring/Summer...not for Christmas!

The bow is simply strips of red fabric I found in my remnant stash.  Two strips of fabric are the tie, and two strips are the bow.  All of it was hot glued together.  The wreath form was 2.50 @ Joanns.  (On sale this week.)  I hear you can get wreath forms at the dollar store.  I completely forgot about that when I bought this.

Oh yeah, did I mention that yesterday, on my hubby's day off work, my two youngest kids, he and I all went acorn hunting at a local park?  I spent much of the time trying to keep the 13m old from putting acorns in her mouth!  With 2 full bags and 8 cold hands later, we left!

Whatcha thinking???

And the...

Hobos have it!

Starting next Monday, in celebration of 100 followers here at Vibrant Designs, I will be giving away one of my Easy Hobo bags.  Ironically, this is the bag that is on sale this month!  So, if you are a lover of the Easy Hobo bag, find out here how you can get it for cheap!  In other news...

On Saturday, I was a vendor at my very first Craft Show!!  Ok so...didn't go quite as well as I was hoping, but I did get some great experience and got the name Vibrant Designs out to the locals around here.  My partner in crime who doesn't have a website yet (hint, hint!) did pretty well!  She couldn't believe anyone wanted to buy her stuff. :) She makes beaUtiful crocheted baby clothes!  I will share some of her beauties very soon...

In the mean time, a photo of our display at the fair...

It wasn't the best, or the most professional, but we worked hard and I think it was eye-catching.

Do you like Vibrant Designs on Facebook yet?  Because if you don't, you should!  This coming Saturday I am hosting a Facebook ONLY Vibrant Designs Craft Fair!!  In order to see the things I list for sale, you'll have to be a Facebook Fan.  So, here's the deal.  All day on Saturday, I will be listing various bags and accesories for sale on Facebook.  The first person to comment/say they want the item on the listing will buy it.  They will leave their email address and I will send them an invoice via paypal for what is due.

Did I mention that this is going to be an amazing sale?  We're not just talking a couple dollars off the price!  I can't leak the discounts but if you'd like to get in on the amazing deals we'll be offering, be sure to like us on Facebook!  And don't forget to check back throughout the day for all the new listings!

Ummm...does anyone else have an announcement to make???

Business Card Wallet Tutorial

You may have noticed at the bottom of my sidebar is a button linking up to a great idea over at Twelve Crafts called Stuff Your Stocking Saturday.  Well...

Last week at Twelve Crafts, Elizabeth had me over as her Saturday Stuff your Stocking guest!  I know, right!  I was so excited to be guest posting there!  So, in case you missed this tutorial over there, I'm sharing it with you again.  I'd love to see some photos if any of you try it out.

This project is great because all you need to make this wallet is a couple scraps of fabric and a couple scraps of heavyweight interfacing.  So first things first...

Materials
-2 fabric scraps  (1/8 yrd)
-2 interfacing scraps (1/4 yrd)
-matching thread
-normal sewing notions

Unless otherwise noted, use a 1/4" seam allowance.
Step 1.  Cut two pieces from your desired fabric to measure 3 1/2"x8 1/2".  Cut your interfacing to match the size.  Iron it to the wrong side of the fabric per the manufacturer's directions.

Step 2.

Fold one piece in half length wise to cut out the thumb piece. Cut a 1/4 of a circle out on the fold, at the top of the fabric piece. Do this to both pieces of fabric.

Step 3. Line them up, right sides together, with the thumb piece lining up as well.

Begin sewing about 2/3 of the way down one side of the wallet.

Be sure to back stitch a couple times at the beginning and the end for strength when turning at the end. It helps to use a small stitch when manuvering around the curve at the thumb piece. Leave a 2 inch space along the side for turning the wallet.

Step 4.
Clip your corners and your seam allowance on the curve. Do not cut the stitches!! Turn wallet right side out and press well.

Step 5. Top stitch all the way around the wallet.

Step 6.
Fold wallet in half length wise, then stitch down each long side.

Voila! You have your business card wallet!

SURPRISE!!!

Should I save the exciting stuff for the end or do it first???

I think I'm gonna save it...so first up are a couple more Buttercup Bags I tried. Remember my first one?  Yup.  The pattern comes from Made-by-Rae and I really liked the first one.   I tried a couple more because I wanted to see what this bag would look like with box pleats, or two bigger pleats instead of 5 small ones.  So, here's a couple more...

This first one turned out great.  I did four pleats facing each other.  There are two pockets inside.

This second one I had high hopes for...that soon plummeted.  I did a box pleat on this one and the bag shape does NOT hold well.  Also, I HATE the lining I picked.  That will never happen again.  It was some kind of slippery nylon which looked great with the outside fabric but does not hold it's shape well at all.  Here's why I think the box pleats don't work.

*They are too large...so the crease from the pleats extends beyond the bottom of the bag, which causes the bag to lose it's cute rounded shape.  It wants to fold instead.  I wish you guys could see this in person.*

NOW

For the exciting stuff!

Have you noticed anything this morning??  Like a particular number on my blog somewhere?

Overnight, we reached our first hundred mark!  Yes, that's right.  100 followers!  I am so excited that I decided we need to celebrate somehow...and what better way to celebrate than with a followers only giveaway??  Here's the best part...the bag has not been created yet.  I am calling all of my followers to tell me which of my bag styles I should make for this giveaway???  Leave me a comment telling me which bag style you would choose.  The style with the most comments for it will be the one made for this giveaway.   I'll tally up the votes on Sunday @ midnight EST, and announce which style won on Monday morning.  The giveaway will commence the following Monday.

Exciting, right?  Thanks for all of you wonderful followers for helping get my name out there!  You are amazing.

the Heidi Bag...a few photos

Sorry folks! No tutorial yet.  I'm not THAT fast.  But, I got the photo shoot done and can now show you my two latest Heidi Bags.  The first one, in pinks and greens is my favorite.  It's also my all time favorite fabric.  I haven't found another fabric that I like quite so much as this.  :)  It turned out 'almost' perfect.  There is one tiny little flaw (which irritates me like no other) but more than likely, no one but me would ever notice!  I had some trouble with the second bag...and the odd thing is, that they are EXACTLY the same pattern.  Demensions are all the same...except for one thing.

Another angle...it's still my favorite :)

Here is the second...which actually was the first.  The top black band is odd.  It lays funny.  I thought it had something to do with the straight lines of the bag as opposed to curved lines...(like Made-by-Rae's Buttercup bag)...but the first (er, second) bag turned out correctly.  Ok. A recap-I made the pink/black bag first and the band on top came out...funny.  Then I made the pink/green bag and all is right with the world again.  And as I mentioned before there is only difference in the two bags.  You CAN see the difference by looking at the pictures....can anyone tell me what it is??

If these little gals don't sell at my craft fair on Saturday, then they will be making their way into my Etsy shop on Sunday!

This and That

Blog Revamp Update:  Obviously, I chose the vintage sign which was NOT my first choice actually.  I really like this one...

But when I uploaded them all to my sidebar, they just looked like 5 of the same photos all in a row.  The vintage signs, when uploaded, actually made sense.  So, that's what I went with.

I've been noticing a number of you beautiful people mentioned that you like my Heidi Bag.
My first and only Heidi Bag...
Since I haven't revisited this bag since it's inception last summer, I decided I needed to make a couple of them.  Photos of the two newest Heidi Bags to come VERY soon.  The exciting part (at least I think it is) would be that I am now working on a tutorial for this bag.  Would anyone be interested in that?

And the last thing to share with you...

Here are a couple things I've been working on lately.
I mentioned this great pattern by keykalou last week.  I figured out the batting problem and this finished product turned out better than the first.
Less bulky...

The right size...

Easier to maneuver...

Have I ever mentioned that I love purple?  My favorite color...since I was 3.
and I like the green and pink combo...

Just wait until I show you my favorite fabric!

Blog Revamp...Thoughts?

I am going to revamp my blog look.  For sure I will be changing all of my side buttons to coincide with one of these that I have created.  I'm taking a vote: which one do you like?  What do you think 'goes' with my blog?  Also, should I change my banner to match or leave the vintage sewing machine??

Without further ado....here are the four options that I've come up with.

vintage-sign

So, which one would you choose?

Rana Clutch Tutorial

Oh yes, you heard me correctly!  Earlier this week, I guest posted at Flamingo Toes, sharing for the first time, my Rana Clutch tutorial.  In case you missed that, here it is in all it's glory. Enjoy...and please, email me photos if you try it!

Materials Needed
Fat quarter of fabric
magnetic snap
cooardinating thread
fusible interfacing
normal sewing notions
Notes:
*Use a 1/2" seam allowance throughout unless otherwise noted.
Step 1. Cutting your fabric.
1. The base for this pattern is a triangle. you can go with whatever size you want, but the measurements I use are as follows. The base or bottom of the triangle/bag is 12 1/2" and eash side is 13 1/2".
2. Cut your 2 triangles from each fabric. Lay a ruler/yardstick/measureing tape on your fabric and mark a line that is 12 1/2" long. This is the base/bottom of the bag.
3. Find the center of the line and mark it. Draw a line from that mark, perpendicular to the first one.

4. Place the ruler on one end of the base line and find the spot on the perpendicular line that measure 13 1/2". Draw a line here.
5. Follow step 4 to complete the triangle on the other side.
6. Use this triangle to cut out the other three triangles.
7. Set one triangle aside from each fabric for later. Take the main fabric triangle and measure up from the bottom on each side placing a mark at the half way point. Now connect these dots and cut that top off.
8. Follow step 2 with your lining fabric as well. Now you should have 2 triangles and 2 trapezoids.
Step 2. Attach your pocket now.
1. I atach a small patch pocket that measures about 2"x3". Cut a piece of fabric that measureses
6 1/2"x3 1/2". fold in half wrong sides together and pin.
2. Sew around the three open sides, leaving a hole on the long end for turning. Backstitch at both ends of the hole for support in turning.
3. Clip the corners and turn right side out. Poke out corners with your scissors and press the hole. Sew closed.
4. Topstitch on the long end that will be the top of the pocket.
5. Choose which side you want your pocket on: pin and sew in place with a small seam allowance.
Step 3. Sewing the body pieces together.
1. Cut out your interfacing pieces. Each piece will be interfaced. Attach the interfacing as per the directions.
2. With the main fabric pieces, line up the trapezoid bottom with the triangle bottom, right sides together and pin in place. Starting at the top of the trapezoid, sew down the side, bottom and up the other side backstitching at each end.
3. Follow step 2 for your lining pieces as well. Don't forget to leave an opening at the bottom of the triangle lining for turning your bag. Be sure to back stitch at either side of the opening for strength.

Step 4. Boxing the Bottoms
1. Smoosh (don't you just love that word?) one of your bottom corners together matching up your side seam with your bottom seam. Measure approximately 1 1/4" from the stitched corner and pin. Sew this down.

2. Follow step 1 for the other 3 corners of the bag. (two of those 3 corners are from the lining.)
3. Clip off the corners on the other side of the seam.
4. At this point, you'll want to insert the magnetic snap. Take your lining bag and make a mark 2" down from the top of the trapezoid. Insert the female half of the snap on this side.
5. Put the male half of the snap on the female half and use this to make your mark for the other side of the snap. Fold the flap down and push it onto the prongs that are exposed. When in doubt, measure, measure, measure!! If you don't know how to insert these snaps, you can use velcro or use this tutorial.
Step 4. Putting the bag together
1. Turn main body of the bag right side out. Turn lining of the bag wrong side out. (which is technically the correct way for the lining to be when it's actually in the bag.)
2. Place main bag body inside the lining bag body. Right sides should be together. Line up your side seams so they match.

3. Pin at these two places (the side seams you just matched up) and then pin all the way around the top of the bag and up and around the flap. I hope I'm clear!

4. Sew all the way around the top of the bag, backstitching when you come back to the beginning where you first started to sew.
5. Clip the corner of the flap, right up next to the seam. Be sure you don't clip into the stitching. Snip into the corners where the flap meets the trapezoid.
(NOTE: you do this to give a sharper point. Try turning it without clipping the corner...you'll see what I mean.)

6. Remember that nifty little hole you left in the lining? Reach through the hole and grab the main bag. Pull it through the hole...and the lining will follow.
Stuff the lining inside the bag.
YOU ARE ALMOST DONE! This would be a good time to press your bag again...especially around the edge of your bag.
7. You want to pull that top seam apart as much as possible without pulling your stitches and then pin all the way around again.
This is your finishing touch...makes your bag look more professional. Topstitch all the way around your bag with a really tiny seam allowance, about 1/8". Once this is done, sew up the hole in your bag by hand or if you're like me and don't care, by machine.
Enjoy your new clutch!!
